Traveling with a toddler can feel like a challenge, but with a bit of planning and creativity, it can also be a lot of fun! Whether you're flying for a family vacation or a visit to relatives, keeping your little one entertained in the confined space of an airplane doesn’t have to require fancy toys or tons of supplies. Here are 5 simple, no-fuss activities that are perfect for toddlers on a plane.

1. Sticker Fun

A pack of stickers can go a long way on a flight. I always pack a small booklet of reusable stickers, so Luka can decorate his tray table, his seat, or even a scrap of paper I bring along. It's a great way to keep him engaged for a bit without worrying about messes. Plus, reusable stickers are a lifesaver because you can clean up quickly when it’s time to move on to something else!

2. Interactive Picture Books

We love bringing along a few of Luka's favourite interactive books that involve flaps, textures, or simple buttons that make noise. These types of books are great for plane trips because they’re lightweight, easy to carry, and help keep your toddler entertained. Luka loves lifting flaps to reveal hidden pictures, and I enjoy reading to him while pointing out objects and encouraging conversation.

3. Painter’s Tape Fun

Forget "I Spy"—this is a super simple, low-mess alternative that toddlers love! Bring along a roll of painter's tape (it’s easy to remove and won’t leave any sticky residue behind) and let your toddler stick it on the tray table, seat, or window. They can rip it, stick it, and even create patterns or shapes. It’s a great way to keep their hands busy while giving them some creative control over their space—plus, it’s a surprisingly engaging activity that lasts longer than you'd expect!

4. Suction Toys

Suction toys are a total game changer for plane travel! These small, portable toys (like suction cups that stick to windows or tray tables) can provide endless fun and entertainment. Luka loves sticking them on the window to watch them hold tight during the flight, or even pressing them onto the tray table and rearranging them. They’re mess-free, easy to pack, and great for encouraging fine motor skills as your toddler moves them around.

5. Miniature Art Station

You don’t need to bring a whole arts-and-crafts kit to entertain your toddler on a plane—just a small notepad and a few crayons will do! If your toddler is into drawing or doodling, this can keep them occupied for a while. You can also encourage them to draw simple things like animals, their favourite foods, or even people they see around them (just keep it basic!). Plus, it gives you an opportunity to chat with them about what they’re drawing, which can make it even more engaging.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to pack snacks, as they are always a great way to keep little ones happy and distracted during a flight. A few healthy, fun treats can be an activity in themselves!

Traveling with toddlers might not always be smooth sailing, but with a little creativity, you can make your flight experience much more enjoyable. These simple activities are perfect for keeping them entertained without the need for a huge bag of toys or a complicated setup.
